2008 Headshot

Short version: mostly closely matched with John Edwards, and Barak Obama. Matched least with Ron Paul and Fred Thompson (big surprise!). I edited it to remove candidates that have already withdrawn from the race (Tancredo, Dodd, and Biden).

91% John Edwards
91% Barack Obama
86% Hillary Clinton
85% Mike Gravel
83% Dennis Kucinich
78% Bill Richardson
43% Rudy Giuliani
29% John McCain
23% Mike Huckabee
22% Mitt Romney
19% Ron Paul
13% Fred Thompson

Confirmation: I'm a Supreme Nerd
2008 Headshot
[info]unwiredben
Since my friend [info]vernard took it, I knew I had to take it as well. I actually scored five points less than him, but considering that I don't have a high-performance computing cluster in my closet, I think that's appropriate. I hear that 93 is still an "A" in this state.

I am nerdier than 93% of all people. Are you nerdier? Click here to find out!

(Note: as a nerd, I really appreciate that this meme cut-and-paste text is both well-formed HTML and includes nice alt text so those who need visual assistance can still determine the scope of my nerdliness.)

First Sentence of the Month Meme for 2005
2008 Headshot
[info]unwiredben
(Editorial note - for the purposed of this meme, my "first post" for each month was my first public post in that month that involved original writing.)

January: This was the month when I headed to California for interviews with PalmSource and TapWave.

February: After dinner tonight, I stopped by the Fry's in Sunnyvale to waste some time before heading back to the hotel.

March: Last night, the Show With No Name team go together to go over final preparations for the two big shows on Saturday.

April: If you've noticed an occasional popup ad showing up when using Firefox 1.0, you've been hit by some of the newer techniques that evade the default popup blocker in Firefox.

May: Last night, I headed down to the Hideout to see their production of "Start Trekkin'", an all-improvised long-form episode of classic Star Trek.

June: It strikes me as odd that the thing that bothered me the most about the graffiti I saw in the men's restroom at that Alamo Village last night wasn't the content of the message; it was the author using the wrong form for a possessive pronoun, writing "it's" instead of "its".

July: I had this wave of red stateism come over me when I was chatting on my cell phone with lizardprincess while sitting in the front seat of a red Ford F250 crew cab pickup truck in the parking lot of a Chattanooga Wal*Mart.

August: I've got a new favorite finger food.

September: I walked to dinner last night.

October: I saw these lounge shorts at Target earlier today and took a quick picture.

November: So, I just found out that there's an eBook version of the book based on the movie that's based on the video game "Doom".

December: The new garbage disposal seems to work much better than my old one.

LJ Interests Meme (automated version)
2008 Headshot
[info]unwiredben

LJ Interests meme results

  1. bill hicks:
A Texas comedian who died before his time, and a staple in the Show With No Name's clip library. We probably replayed every one of his TV appearances at some time or another. He wasn't known for jokes, but instead for rants against the government, against our society, and against hypocrisy.
  2. conan o'brien:
While I always skip his monologues, the humor bits are often some of the funniest things on television. He's not afraid to go totally absurd if it suits his comedic aims.
  3. firefly:
Joss Whedon goes sci-fi western and produces one of the best half-seasons of television ever. Now, they've got a movie too. Whee!
  4. history:
I like reading about the history of science and technology. I've got a book about the aborted "Project Orion" on my short list right now. That was a project in the 1950's and early 60's to use atomic bombs as a power source for spaceflight.
  5. linux:
Hmmm... I first discovered Linux in early 1992 when a certain TA of mine in my second CS course at Georgia Tech mentioned that this little project was out there and that it might be worth looking into if I wanted something to hack on. I started by reading the entire Linux mailing list up to that point, about 800 pages of data in print out form, thanks to the big, fast, and cheap printers in the Rich Building at Georgia Tech.

I'm currently using Linux for lots of things :)
  6. palmone:
The old name of the company that employs me. We're now just "Palm".
  7. sarah silverman:
She gets away with being totally offensive so often because we can see that she's just saying things to provoke people. However, I'm starting to think that she's just a very wrong girl.
  8. spaceflight:
The last man to touch the moon did so 18 months before I was born. The first Space Shuttle launched when I was seven. Challenger flew up with I was eleven. I remember seeing the original Voyager pictures of Jupiter and Saturn and being amazed. I love the idea of humanity leaving our home and exploring the rest of the universe.
  9. tegan and sara:
I love these girls from Canada and their power indie pop music. I listed to "If I Were You" over and over, but their current album "So Jealous" hasn't grown on me as much.
  10. venus hum:
Wow. Just one of the best groups out there right now. I first was exposed to them in their work with the Blue Man Group, and I immediately went to their site and ordered one of everything. Female singer, guys with guitars and synths, and really great songwriting.

Interests Meme
2008 Headshot
[info]unwiredben
Borrowed from the much-too-sweet [info]megrainwater:
Look at your LJ "interests" list. If you have fewer than 50 interests, pick every fifth one. If you have between fifty and seventy-five interests, pick every seventh one. If you have over seventy-five interests, pick every tenth one. If you have fewer than ten, pick all of 'em. List them on your LJ, and tell everyone exactly what it is about these things that interests you so much.

Meme: Tests Show I'm "The Wit"
2008 Headshot
[info]unwiredben
the Wit
(60% dark, 30% spontaneous, 11% vulgar)
your humor style:
CLEAN | COMPLEX | DARK

You like things edgy, subtle, and smart. I guess that means you're probably an intellectual, but don't take that to mean you're pretentious. You realize 'dumb' can be witty--after all isn't that 'the Simpsons' philosophy?--but rudeness for its own sake, 'gross-out' humor and most other things found in a fraternity leave you totally flat. I guess you just have a more cerebral approach than most. You have the perfect mindset for a joke writer or staff writer. Your sense of humor takes the most effort to appreciate, but it's also the best, in my opinion.

A Failed Attempt at Picking Six Songs
2008 Headshot
[info]unwiredben
So, my friend [info]lizardprincess complains that she can't do the six-song meme because she's got at least 79 songs from her well-organized iTunes database that rank in her upper echelon. I can respect that. It's a well argued point.

I don't think I can do it either, so I'm going to instead list my top six albums from the 1980s, defined as 1980-1989. That's a bit more limited in scope, and I think I can manage a pretty good list, although from my results, I couldn't just pick six. I guess I'd be a bad lottery player.

Top Six:
"Time and Tide", Basia
"Stop Making Sense (Soundtrack)", Talking Heads
"Solitude Standing", Suzanne Vega
"Our Beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart", Camper Van Beethoven
"Life's Too Good", Sugarcubes
"Lincoln", They Might Be Giants

Honorable Mention:
"The Raincoats", The Raincoats
"It's Better to Travel", Swing Out Sister
"In My Tribe", 10,000 Maniacs
"The Innocence Mission", Innocence Mission
"The Indescribable Wow", Sam Phillips

Worthwhile Compilations:
"Singles 45's and Under", Squeeze
"The Whole Story", Kate Bush
"Eponymous", R.E.M.

Emboldened Movie List Meme
2008 Headshot
[info]unwiredben
1. Take this list and post it into your own LJ, and mark the movies you've seen (in bold).
2. Add five more movies to the end of the list.
3. Count how many you have seen. If you've seen more than 70 movies, you are a Movie Whore. Post the score of how many movies you've seen in the subject line.
4. Use a LJ-cut since you've got at least one LJ-friend who doesn't really want to see an ungodly number of movies snaking its way down the computer monitor (now at 311).
5. (optional) Question your friend's taste in movies

I have seen about 150 of these movies.
