Friday Night Musical Genius
Last night's Asylum Street Spankers show was very, very hott. Yes, I'm using an extra 't'. It was that good.

The group did two sets, including a really rambunctious version of Wammo's "Hick-Hop" gangsta rap/country murder ballad, and a tv-theme-song-filled version of Blag Flag's "TV Party". I loved it when Christina Marrs sang a moving version of "The Rainbow Connection" from the Muppet Movie, and then Sick, their recently added punk-rock fiddle player, led a bluegrass version of Nine Inch Nails' "Closer" where the word "animal" kept getting replaced by the whole band making barnyard animal noises. I think Sick's one of the best additions to the group in a long time, with both excellent instrumentation and great theatrical skill. I was getting a little burned out on the Spankers a few years ago, but after last summer's Spanker Re-construction show and this one, I'm going to make sure to catch them again ASAP.

And I'd never seen a gutter used as an instrument before. Nice of Flipnotics to have one so handy for Wammo.

Other favorite memory: Sick's skill in getting a mandolin with a short strap over his head spikes without damaging the instrument or his hair.

Hick-Hop: Best. Wammo Song. Ever.
