Emboldened Movie List Meme
pokemon
unwiredben
1. Take this list and post it into your own LJ, and mark the movies you've seen (in bold).
2. Add five more movies to the end of the list.
3. Count how many you have seen. If you've seen more than 70 movies, you are a Movie Whore. Post the score of how many movies you've seen in the subject line.
4. Use a LJ-cut since you've got at least one LJ-friend who doesn't really want to see an ungodly number of movies snaking its way down the computer monitor (now at 311).
5. (optional) Question your friend's taste in movies

I have seen about 150 of these movies.

Wow, you doubled the MOvie Whoredom stats. Impressive.

Yes, but the list of films that I really ought to have seen is impressive too... never seen "Jaws", for example, even after having had someone lend me the DVD for months.

I've never seen Jaws.

I'm kinda surprised that Citizen Kane isn't even on the list. (I would have added it, but I haven't seen it either.)

In your not seen set, I'd recommend these:

Donnie Darko
Lilo & Stitch
Truly, Madly, Deeply
Waiting for Guffman
I'd recommend Labyrinth and Dark Crystal, but if you've seen neither, you're obviously not a man who cares for muppets.

I'm not sure how much my movie taste would match yours. Our lists would have a lot of overlap. The big ones you have that I don't are the three colors. I assume you recommend them since you saw the lot.

I like me some Muppets, but I never really had a "go back and catch fantasy movie" phase. I've got the Guffman DVD, but hadn't had a chance to view it yet. "Donnie Darko" is also on my short list.

And yes, I highly recommend the Three Color series. One of the most amazing sets of film's I'd ever seen.

Waiting for Guffman is actually pretty embarrassing for me to watch. I feel for the people deeply. It's like the other comedies by the same guys (Spinal Tap, Best in Show, a Mighty Wind), but more so. It's the movie equivalent of the super-sour 'Cry Baby' candies.

Dark Crystal and Labyrinth both had Brian Froud as production designer, which gives them a different look from other muppet stuff. He's the guy who did the Faeries and Gnomes books. Later on, he collaborated with Terry Jones to do the pressed fairy books, which were kind of a parody of his earlier work. Anyway, he's got an amazing eye, and those two movies are amazing to see, even if you don't like the story, which I do.

I'd suggest waiting till you can see those two in the theater. Dark Crystal, I hear, is going to have a sequel soon. The Drafthouse picks both movies up on a regular basis.

Re: Recommendations

OK, i'll pass along the meme. I feel obligated to, since I've actually seen more of these than Ben "move whore" Combee. Not least because I've had a few of those "catch up on the ... " phases - so Jaws, Labyrinth, Dark Crystal. I also did Blockbuster's "free oldies" for a while - y'know, get a new release, get a free "regular" - this caused me to view a lot of my back catalog. And of course, now netflix is doing that quite adequately as well (though less so when I've got a queue full of TV series..)

I'm too self-absorbed at the moment to post the movies I have seen, but your "not seen" list caught my eye too. "Kingpin" is a favorite of mine and "I Am Sam" sneaks through tear-jerker force field and is a wonderful movie.

I'll just go ahead and buy Labryinth and Dark Crystal for Jake and we'll watch them one visit. They both horrified me as a child in a rites-of-passage sort of way (kind of like Watership Down) and should be mandatory viewing for children and adults everywhere.

I've seen at least 211 of these. Here's how I did on the New York Times' "Top 1000 Films of All Time"...
