Abandoned Airfield

I've often passed by what looked like an airfield in my travels around the Parmer Lane & IH-35 area, and I kept thinking that I needed to find out what that was. I'd usually drive by the runway on the way home from Freebird's or Masala Wok, taking a back route over to Parmer. I finally did the research tonight, and I'd like to present what I found.

First, lets start with Google Maps. To confirm the area, I started at my house, scrolled east on Parmer Lane, and found the field using the satellite view. Here's a link to the site. OK, so that looks like a runway, albeit one in very poor shape. I then went to airnav.com and searched for anything near 78727, but there were no fields, public or private, in the vicinity. That's confirmed my suspicion that the airfield was no longer active.

Google comes to my rescue again, and a search on "north austin airfield" brings me to this page: Abandoned & Little-Known Airfields: Texas - Eastern Austin area. The last entry on the page is a small history of the Austin Executive Airpark, which operated from the late 1950's through the year 2000. I suspect it closed because of the growth in the area; with Dell expanding, it became more profitable for the owners to scrap the field and parcel off the land for development.

Hi-Def Score!

I just got a bulk email from Time Warner about their coverage of the Olympics, and I noticed that they mentioned "Universal HD". This is a network NBC Universal owned network that mostly shows old TV shows and movies from the Universal library. They've got Knight Rider, Quantum Leap, and Monk running frequently, but it looks like TWC added it to the lineup because they would be carrying a lot of the sporting events. OK, I'm not that excited. However, UHD also runs the new Battlestar Galactica in high def (albeit a bit later than the original Sci-Fi channel run). I'd just sent Time Warner a mail a few days ago asking them to add this channel for that reason, and now I find it sitting at channel 1612. Very cool -- the next HD airing is Sunday night with the early season two episode "Home".
