Happy 10th Anniversary, Palm!

My trip to California overlapped with the start of Palm's big 10th Anniversary bash, so I got to join in with the festivities before heading to the airport.  They had three food lines, lots of beverages, a live band, carnival games, fortune tellers, inflated contents (bull riding, running with bungees), giveaways, and a silent auction to benefit a local charity.  I was able to get a couple of bright orange tumblers for my kitchen, one of their anniversary T-shirts, and a grip pad for my car out of the event, along with plenty of heirloom tomato salad, dill-spiced potatoes, and veggie kabobs.  I saw Jeff Hawkings in the crowd early on, wearing a "pilot"-logo polo shirt, and saw another guy with a "Palm Computing" golf shirt with the very first company logo (featuring a palm tree) on it.

After a year and a half, I'm still excited to be working for this company, and they still seem to like me.  Of course, having about the best possible job in the world for my particular set of interests helps a lot too :)  Here's to ten more years!

Has it really been ten years? God, I remember my first P1000 like it was yesterday.

So, how's the Project Of Which You Cannot Speak going?

Unspeakably fun :)

I was thinking the 700p would be the ideal platform for a mobile MMORPG. Since no one has written one, I've decided that I need to become a Palm developer. I've given myself 6 months to get up to speed.

I need a kickstart to get going. Can you assist in my learning process, or do you know someone who would be willing to help? (I need a mentor, as my background is in IT infrastructure. e.g. storage, servers (Solaris/Windows/Linux), networking, load balancers, DNS/DHCP, LDAP, etc).

So far I have gotten as far as downloading and installing Palm Developer Suite 1.2. I need to get a "hello world" going. (I plan to start by writing PACE apps, but I know that my eventual goal will to be writing ARM libraries for alot of the background work, like graphics and networking, and object caching.)

Re: Idea... need help.

A MMORPG's a big task, but several people are attempting this already... I remember some developers that were going to try this out on the Tapwave Zodiac before the company folded.

PODS 1.2 isn't a very good environment for development, but you can get started there. Getting a copy of CodeWarrior for Palm OS 9.3 is recommended.
There are some game SDKs out there, like Razor at http://www.palmgear.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=software.showsoftware&prodid=9953, but a lot of them haven't been maintained in a while.

Good luck.

Thanks for the headsup. I just placed an order for CodeWarrior for Palm OS.

Does Codewarrior come with some beginner walkthroughs? It seems all the material I can find is geared at experienced coders.

If others are already working on a MMORPG, I will have to find some other impossibly improbable project to throw my energy into.

(I plan to start with lots of little network applications, in order to learn my way around the Treo network stack.)

Re: Idea... need help.

There is a tutorial included in PDF form with CodeWarrior -- however, it's more about using the environment. I suggest reading the book "Palm OS Network Programming" as well as the "Palm OS Companion" PDF that's in the PalmSource SDK. Those are good starts. Also read through archives for palm-dev-forum to see the common beginner mistakes.

I just got my copy of CodeWarrior for Palm OS v9.3. I had some issues with the installer and updater.

I called Freescale support to get help with these issues, and they had the gall to tell me that I just paid $400 for a piece of unsupported software.

Please tell me it ain't so? If it is, this is going to be a lot harder than I expected.

Re: Idea... need help.

I was the last engineer to work on CodeWarrior for Palm OS, and I've been gone since January 2004. Sorry. You can get a lot of support on the palm-dev-forum -- I answer questions there from time to time.
