After Party
I got back a couple of hours ago from astraether's birthday party. Dinner was at Vinnie's, a nice Italian place on Barton Springs Road that I'd not visited for a few years. They did a good job hosting the party of near 20, including several crew members of The Show With No Name, and a few new friends I'd seen mentioned here at LiveJournal. The food was good, and the conversation was better. Ajit and Leslie talked for quite a while about writing and writers, while I took it all in, ocassionally contributing. Later, I got Brian and company talking about bad movies, a topic of which Cinco has endless knowledge.

After dinner, we went down to Sixth, meeting at the Driscoll Hotel bar, then checking out the "too sedate" Red Fez, and making our way to the "cheesy $7 cover" Polly Ester's. I'd never been in this dance club, and I found it a bit pathetic. I've never really liked 70's dance anthems, so I couldn't get very excited about "Celebrate" or "Brick House". Fortunately, the dark downstairs club had a more compatible DJ, and I was able to find a minor groove with classics like Deee-Lite's "Groove is in the Heart" and the Cure's "Just Like Heaven". I didn't feel much like dancing, and my sinus problems were acting up, so I left the group around midnight to head on home.

On the drive in, I thought about what tracks the DJ would spin at my ideal dance club... I have the feeling my place wouldn't be too popular, but I'd probably go every once in a while. Here's a quick sample of the repertoire:

  • Deee-Lite - Runaway
  • B-52's - Love Shack
  • Basia - Drunk on Love (40 Oz. of Love Mix)
  • Lush - Ladykiller
  • Dido - Hunter (Remix)
  • Ace of Base - Beautiful Life
  • Beth Orton - Anything (Video Version)
  • Bjork - Human Behavior
  • Cibo Matto - Spoon
  • Interpol - PDA
  • Siouxie and the Banshees - Kiss Them For Me
  • DNA with Suzanne Vega - Tom's Diner
  • Tori Amos - Raspberry Swirl
  • Everything But the Girl - Walking Wounded (Todd Terry Remix)

Danceable, but probably not too exciting to the average club kid.

Hey man, it was good meeting you. Next time we'll have to chat more. I think if we got a smaller group for coffee, we'd have more of a chance to sit down and talk. Anyway, I hope to see you again sometime soon.

I was good to meet you too, and I'd love to talk more when you're back in town. I enjoyed getting out, and it looks like I'll need to get some actual clubwear in the near future; finding good non-leather shoes for men tends to be a problem, hence the synth Birks.
